Since 2017, Estonia's Smart-ID has put the national ID card on the phone, and it has become the everyday authentication and signature tool for more than 3.7 million people across the three Baltic states. At its core is SplitKey: one part of the key lives on the phone, the other on a server, so neither can sign on its own. Gerege Systems' e-ID Mongolia is built on the same principle, with an API compatible with Smart-ID.

Traditional mobile signatures keep the key on the SIM card or a chip in the phone. Smart-ID and e-ID Mongolia split the key in two mathematically and store each part in a different place. Lose the phone or hack the server, and a signature still cannot be forged.
